First published in 1867, this is the scarce second edition of William McDowall's history of Dumfries, Scotland, enlarged and with illustrations not present in the first edition. Bookplate of one 'Donald Whyte' to front pastedown. Discussing also Nithsdale, Annandale and the western border. Illustrated with a chromolithograph frontispiece, colour title page, and a folding facing page viii. Bound without the three additional plates called for. In half morocco. Externally smart with minor rubbing to the boards and extremities. Fading to the spine and the odd mark to the boards. Bookplate of one 'Donald Whyte' to front pastedown. Internally firmly bound.
